Silhouettes, as we know them today, have roots as far back as cave dwellers.......which we have seen in early cave etchings. Silhouettes have been called "shadow portraits", "shades" and even "profiles in miniature", and were most popular about 1770-1860. It was during the 18th Century, that the name "silhouette" came into use, during the French Minister of France's time, Mr. Etienne de Silhouette (1709-1769). Mr. Silhouette, enjoyed making cut profiles of folks, out of black paper.........he was known for being quite frugal. Which is why people began calling these cut profiles, "silhouettes", as they thought the practice was cheap and miserly, just like Mr. Silhouettes trait of being "frugal".
But, since silhouettes were inexpensive they became quite popular. A skilled "shade cutter", could complete a person's likeness in well under a minute, and often itnerant shade cutters sold busts "two for twenty five cents". People could exchange these likenesses, and keep them as reminders of loved ones just as we do today with photographs.
Here at Farmhouse Primitives, we have made our own rendition of these silhouettes from times past. We have aged them to appear time worn and yellow, with stains, as tho they have been handed down from generation to generation. We believe you will enjoy these in your own homes, as much as we do ourselves, lending an appearance of "early times".
